Community Investment Campaign - Sample Letter
Use this sample letter as a guide. Do not fill in the blanks.
Dear Representative _________________,
My name is __________________ and I am very active in an organization that has been fighting for ___________________ for many years now. You were able to help us before and we are asking you to continue supporting us and our communities during these difficult economic times. We need you to support restoring and implementing line items _____________________ Restoring those line items will_________________________ (Suggestions: Talk about how many people this program serves, what the specific program is, some personal connection you might have with the State Rep around this issue.)
We know the Commonwealth is going through challenging economic times and we know there is no surplus in the budget. Based on this we ask you to also support our “Community Investment Campaign” that would bring about $600 million dollars in FY11. We are specifically asking you to support the following proposals:
1. Removing the sales tax exemption for smokeless tobacco +o-$8 million advanced by Rep. Hecht - Amendment #287
2. Removing the sales tax exemption for candy and soda advanced by Rep. Patrick - Amendment #329
3. Restoring the tax on dividends and interest to 12 percent, with provisions to exempt moderate-income seniors (+/- $500 million) advanced by Rep. Patrick - Amendment #323
4. Supporting transparency and accountability measures advanced by Rep. Patrick, Rep. D'Amico, Rep. Callahan, Rep. Kaufman, and Rep. Sciortino – Amendments #734, #735, #330, #543, #565, #734, #735, #835 and #836.
